| Background & Biography The Day Laborer Research Institute began as a graduate student research project at UCLA to examine why large numbers of day laborers refused to participate in day laborer programs. Until this research, information on day laborers that local government, police departments, and non-profit organizations used to design programs and shape policy was largely anecdotal. At the Day Laborer Research Institute, we are police officers experienced in day labor and community policing solutions, researchers and organizers with years working with day laborers, including undocumented day laborers, and lawyers with expertise in day labor law and day laborer rights.
